Page Twenty-eight
Hey, I’ve been looking forward to this page for some time. Pretty lame!
Next page I should try showing the whole room, maybe. I’ve just noticed I neglected to do any sort of establishing shot. I’ll have to resketch the next page, but I think it’ll be worth it.
Also, I keep adding new comics to my little link list there on the side, check them out, damn you! I vouch that they all rule.
Also, since I finished up sort of earlier than usual tonight I’m going to try and make some things I’ve been meaning to do for a while. Fun!
Especially since I fixed my computer, and working on art is no longer a frustrating pain in the ass. (yay!)
For some reason I did not expect Schtein to say “rocking” o_o;
I didn’t even notice the lack of establishing shot, probably since prison infirmaries are so familiar to me (and most people?) from movies.
When you see a super-intelligent scientist who distances himself from others and has poor social skills, I think the stereotype you expect is for him to also have geeky, pedantic, bookish language. It’s refreshing to see Beck avoid that stereotype, and instead portray him as clearly having poor social skills not because he CAN’T interact appropriately, but because he WON’T. When Dr. Schtein says something rude, it’s not because “oh he has high functioning autism and doesn’t know any better”– we can see from his language that he’s been normally socialized, but simply chooses not to act appropriately, probably out of his anxieties and distaste for humans.
He didn’t know they were red-on-black? Of course, of course- He’s colorblind. Wow. Poor guy sounds pretty freaked. :< Also, I love Phineas' expression in the first panel.
Also also, I’m now wondering what Phineas’ voice sounds like. :\
He just talks too loud is all.
God, this page makes me laugh so much. I love Phineas’ face in the first panel, and the gradual hiding under the covers. “Seriously, they’re red?”
Bwahahah. Oh, oh poor Schtein. He’s such an adorable murderer.
Of course, I guess he wouldn’t know, would he? He doesn’t seem terribly happy about the revelation.
That actually really sucks that the doctors didn’t tell him. What color did he think they were?
he didn’t really ask them any questions about his eyes. I don’t think he’s given their color any consideration, because he tries not to think about them.
I really dig the red-on-black comment and how bugged he seems by the revelation. It’s a nice little add to his character. Poor Schtein.
Why is that first panel so distinct? Does Phinny have a beefs with the warden? I must know!
The first panel is so…well, alexds1 said it all, distinct. Intense!
I don’t think the lack of an establishing shot at the beginning of this scene is a bad thing. Schtein himself hasn’t had much chance to look around at the room. The close shots fit the mood and scene.
Yeah, Scott McCloud says that if a character wakes up from unconsciousness, there should be no establishing shot.
That’s interesting, I didn’t think about it that way.
New reader, just chugged through the backlog. *gives you a massive thumbs up* Good plot and I am digging the coloring very much. And plot development. Yays. :D
I see Schtein’s eye glow on the blanket in the second panel! The third panel made me fall out of the excitement of a new page. Wow, Schtein, you’re pretty unobservant.
The mechanical eyes are colourblind. It was established in the first couple pages of the comic and hasn’t been mentioned much since, though.
hey, I’ve mentioned it a few times. Might mention it some more, you never know, man.
Oh no, I didn’t mean it like that. I knew fully well that he saw in monochrome because I stalk this comic to every extent. Schtein, I thought you would have been a bit more curious about what those doctors shoved into your head.
no, don’t take it like that. I was being lighthearted. Hard to convey on the internet.
I’m sure he’d be more curious if he wasn’t so depressed and distracted.
he can’t see color, he probably assumed they were grey or blue or something.
He is kind of unobservant, though.
Right… colour blind. I seem to forget that little tid-bit until its brought up again. Maybe you should have some panels every once in a while that are in a grey scale, like we’re looking through Schtein’s eyes, just so that people like me -who have a memory like a goldfish- remember that he is colour blind. Oh, and at the beginning when the doctors mentioned something about getting normal looking eyes, would those see colour?
Schtein staring at Phineas from under the covers like that is hilarious.
They were working on an upgraded model that included color, yeah. They would also have been more realistic looking.
Well something tells me that his eyes are black and his colorblindness is because…
1. If the first comic was in color he woundn’t be colorblind (go lazyness!, no disrespect)
2. He would’nt look like a Villain (who the @#$% want a normal looking super villian)
3. It makes him seem more Cold and Distant (and Freaky)
it’s the other way around, actually. C:
the first chapter’s in black and white BECAUSE he’s colorblind. I was originally going to do this chapter grey scale shaded, but decided to just jump to color entirely for reasons. It’s sort of like… uh… well, Station 12 was kind of a black and white fantasy land, and now he’s in the real world (sort of).
I really like Schtein’s reaction to his creepy eyes. The fact that no one told him, that it clearly bothers him, it makes him more human, adds depth to what otherwise could be a “Muhuhaha I love being a supervillain!!” type stereotype. I feel bad for him.
I think it is so cute that he didn’t know what color his eyes were :)
Aw! He’s going all awkward-teen-on-prom-week. “Oh, god, I’m a hideous freak, don’t look at me, you suck.” Only with glowy red eyes instead of acne.
There, there, sweetie. It really doesn’t look that bad. And it happens to lots of mad scientists your age!
oh man, he never knew? Hahaha I’m not sure why that struck me as funny. 8D
Well, I guess I can understand that since he’s colorblind and all.
Schtein hiding under the covers is the greatest thing ever.
Aww, Schtein. Poor guy. Never gets a break!
Hope he won’t mope about his eyes for too long. But I know I’d be very freaked out as well!
to be honest I don’t think he ever actually stops moping about anything. He’s a mopey guy!
Poor doc. I think his eyes are rather dashing.
“Seriously, they’re red?”
That’s too amusing. XD
I assumed that the doc figured they had been the same color as before. Just, y’know. Mech.
Hey! You updated your Characters page! That’s great! I’d be wondering when Dr. Armastus would show up there!
I did! I should have mentioned it in the update text but I sort of forgot. I need to make drawings for those characters for the page! Perhaps smaller busts or something.
I read that comment and raced to the page, my expression is like ‘derp da derp’. How could I possibly miss this? I mean, cuz like, I cherish this comic like it’s another necessary part of living.
Yay! *goes check Characters Page*
Wait.. Is it pure coincidence that JayJay’s dad is named Edward Jacob?
It… It actually is. :C
