Page Sixtytwo
No! My cup of pencils! It’s all over the floor now! And somehow my arm’s popped off. COME ON. This is why we don’t rough house indoors.
announcment: Yo, I know I’ve been late a lot so far this winter, but just a heads up next page will be late again. Dreeadfully sorry, it is out of my control, as I am pretty much COVERED in poison ivy and it’s between my fingers and on my palms and face and arms and I cannot concentrate on working on stuff at all.
I will still be working on it but probably at a slower pace until this crap clears up. (about a week, I think?) so I’ll get it out as soon as I reasonably can.
Good news, though, this chapter only has like 8 pages to go until it is over! Whee!
Oh, wow. This page is incredible! Worth the wait. Schtein sure recovered fast from being threatened.
Guess he didn’t care that much after all.
Dear god, Id hate to get the good old professor that pissed. Great job as always comrade.
Mmm, Schtein tummy.
schtein’s ability to use lamer slang than even me is awe-inspiring
rockin’!
also wow krow looks like he’s about to puke. or cry. probably both.
He’s gonna have himself a good ol’ fashioned puke-cry.
Phineas Gettin’ shit done. Grab those guys by the collar!
Someone’s got to, good lord
poor phin….. he better get to see his wife again…… IF SHE’S DEAD I’LL NEVER FORGIVE YOU…
M-me? I don’t think she’s dead! Probably not! No real reason for her to be.
Turns out: she was Bruce Willis THE ENTIRE TIME. FUUUUU–
man! nice backbone there, schtein. really, thanks for not being a wuss 100% of the time!
only 95% of the time
Sometimes the inability to read people trumps it.
Another fantastic page Beckey! If anyone’s wondering what Schtein is saying in the last panel, I believe it translates to ” Fly far away from the morbid miasmas.”
Google Translate has this translation for Schtein’s French: “Fly away far from the morbid miasmas!”
Wow, Phineas is gaining more and more development every page you post, it’s exciting! Like everyone above, I’m also very impressed with Schtein. He’s much less anal than he used to be, and it’s hilarious seeing him brush off a sadistic murderer’s threats so easily.
Yikes, Phineas has had a pretty rough past. Little wonder that he’s unfazed by Schtein’s threats.
How fluent is Schtein’s French? He seems to like tossing it around now and then.
He’s fluent, he just doesn’t get enough opportunity to show off I guess.
Awesome art as always! Character development is wonderful, I think Phineas has got to be my favorite :}
Schtein is quoting a French poem called Elevation by Charles Baudelaire. He learned all his French, I believe, from poetry that he tries to use to get ladies….
On a different note, his face in that last panel is PRICELESS. And poor Krow ain’t lookin so good.
Amazing work, as always. String theory is, by far, my favorite webcomic! I really like Phin’s face in that last panel; he’s just like “Ugh, shut the FUCK up.”
Whoa, really? Aw, thank you! :D
Hahah yeah, I think he’s grossed out by the french quoting.
Incredible background detail, Becks! Really inspiring.
it was refreshing to not draw a boring hallway
Schtein is the captain of Good Life Choices.
I am picturing this as a literal ship that he’s shipwrecked onto a rock somehow
Nice quote of Charles Beaudelaire (From the poem Élévation of Les Fleurs du mal)
Schtein’s navel. Bazinga!
Wow. Phin’s pretty strong. Perhaps it’s the adrenaline. Or steroids.
Or that he doesn’t feel pain.
Krow doesn’t seem to be doing very well :(
he’s not having the best time, no
It’s very good! Your art is looking amazing. I think the only problem I had was understanding who was speaking in the first 3 frames – I thought they were in a room and someone new behind a door was shouting and they all froze in place because they heard this. Later Phineas was suddenly saying those words so it took me a while to understand if he had been saying them the whole time (but it looked like his mouth was closed in the panel I thought the speaking was happening in) upon further observation I understood everything, but I think if you had made the first 2 panels wider and showed the characters inside the frames and not popping out into the previous frame it would have been a clearer look at the scene. I’m sorry if Im the only one who didn’t get it haha. I just wanted to give a tip on flow. :) Love the dialogue by the way, and your backgrounds always impress.
Yeah I oughtn’t to have had them breaking the panel borders between two and one I think. Oh well, lesson learned. You’re not the only one, someone mentioned this to me on twitter when I first posted it, so it’s definitely something I screwed up.
Shit, son, Phineas is TCOB like gangbusters up in here. Look at that “I DON’T EVEN GIVE A FUCK THAT I’M KICKING THIS DOOR DOWN!” expression! Or that “Jesus, what did you just say I am sickened” look he’s giving Schtein in the last panel.
Krow looks like he needs a Pepto-latte (what, that’s a thing who said it wasn’t a thing?)… or a blood transfusion… latte.
….. I want a latte for some reason.
Mayhap some of us should keep a running score for these things.
PHIN – FUCKS GIVEN – ZERO
jeez it almost feels eerie XD since its like just the three of them walking down barely populated coridoors! Kinda like in all them zombies in science lab movies! Around any corner another UNDEAD guard could be lurking XD
Panel 2 is awesome, least i can see its Phins talking and the poses their all holding while he kicks the door down!
…What’s up with people going “Poor Krow”? Isn’t the dude a murderer of women? I don’t exactly have much sympathy for a guy like that =\
And whoa, Phineas is married? That’s…interesting O_O wonder what kind of person his wife is…
http://www.stringtheorycomic.com/comics/chaptertwo/page-fiftythree/
In the page 53 of the chapter 2, Jacob Jacobs said that Phineas and his wife were murdering students and having sex with their corpses, before he went to prison.
That’s the legend anyway ;) Who knows what the warden and the prisoners added to the story … or, alternatively, what debaucheries the prosecutors never found evidence of.
yeah, exactly, you can’t really trust the things Jayjay says, can you? He probably doesn’t have reason to lie, but how did he get his info? TV? Hearsay? You don’t know.
Read it in TV Guide!
Mmm, it shouldn’t really matter whether a person murders men or murders women. A murderer’s a murderer either way–and, techincally, all three of our intrepid heroes are just that.
I’d say murdering unsuspecting ladies to get your jollies is a lot worse than a self defense murder or accidental. So Phineas and Krow are still much worse people in the end, there.
Wow. I haven’t commented in a while, but I just want you to know I’m still here, and I’m still loving every little bit of this comic. Phin’s attitude in this page and the last one just–wow. Also, Doc brushing off Phin’s anger so easily? I don’t know about everyone else, but that really tells me something about his insanity.
he continues to be buttheadedly unafraid of Phineas. Probably more stupid than crazy. Or maybe both.
Well if he spent his time getting scared every time Phin has acted like the creepy-ass serial killer he is, I don’t think they’d get very far. He has plenty of time to freak out when/if they escape into the desert!
I already imagined that they wouldn’t get along together, but I thought it would be because of Phin’s insanity, not because of Herville’s douchiness.
Oh, du Baudelaire! Et en français dans le texte! Quoting a french poet made you even more awesome ^^
Google translation isn’t always as good as it should be – sad to say. At one time, I translated French for a living – just so you know I’m not just mouthing off. “Ces” is not “the” but rather should be “these.” I’m surprised that Google has made this fundamental a mistake.
In Baudelaire’s poem, the line quoted is in the voice of poem’s author who is addressing his own soul (hence the referent “toi,” is to “you, my soul,” which is not a word-by-word literal translation but is arguably a more accurate transliteration). In this sense then, this phrase could be taken to have the meaning of “fly away, my soul, far from these morbid miasmas.” Some translations of this line use “unhealthy noxiousness” or “unwholesome place” instead. Overall, Baudelaire does not really translate all that well into English. But in the current context of this story, Schtein’s use of this line is sublime! It sent chills down my spine! What’s next? Voltaire? Oooooo, I love this strip!
Voltaire? Is this the best possible of all worlds?
Robot translation is never that great. I tried to go through it word by word rather than rely on a robot to make sure it wouldn’t sound idiotic on its own. Hopefully I did okay. I’ve never taken any classes in French, though I am beginning to get interested in the idea. It is a lovely language.
I absolutely adore just how determined Phineas looks when kicking down that door. Even if he’s creepy, his faces are making him one of my favorite characters.
Ugh, poison ivy is the worst. D: I hope you feel better and supremely less itchy soon! Take your time on your updates. It will only make the pages better! : D
Haha! amusing how we can read Phineas’ head in the last panel:
– Is that french? EWWWW.
Aww, I totally sympathize with you on the poison ivy thing. When I was really little (like 7 or something) me and my family were at some beach. There were a bunch of plants at the edge of the sand that I was playing and sitting in in my bathing suit. Of coarse it turned out to be poison ivy. According to the doctor my reaction to it was worse than the average. Anyway, don’t worry about being late. I’m amazed you can make such awesome pages in such a short period of time anyway. I’ll stick to obsessively reading String Theory as long as you stick to making it. I’ve read all the pages like a hundred times and I’m constantly refreshing my computer on update days. I’m usually to shy too comment anything, but String Theory’s by far my favourite comic ever.
– Admiring fan person
Oops, I totally spelt course wrong. Oh, well.
Damn, all that blood must be giving Schtein the heebie-jeebies. At least Phin is courteous enough to grab Schtein by the shirt and not the neck.
I just started reading this and…Ho-ly cow. Freaking fantastic comic!
I just discovered this comic this week and I am totally in love with it! Also, the little details in the background are amazing! Well, basically EVERYTHING IS AMAZING. :D
Speaking as someone who worked for 2 decades in a health food store and tried out bunches of homeopathics, the one for poison ivy really does work! You can find it now even in regular drugstores, it’s made by Hyland’s.
I sure hope you’re doing better, at least as good as your art, which is fantastic!
is Krow chubbier since Drew’s death or I am mistaken?
He really let himself go once he realized Stein didn’t want him for his body~
