I’m thinking it’s just him being petty and feeling like shit so he wants other people to feel like shit too. That or he doesn’t trust people and he doesn’t believe Laurence would ever want to help him. I guess there’s a bit of that too but when you act like that much of a douche it’s mostly the first reason.
I think he’s just an arsehole and trying to be friendly. He’s trying to do some light-hearted ribbing to show he’s still on a familiar basis with Larry. I’m not proud of it but I do this all the time to desensitise my better friends to the fact that I’m a jerk. It’s just instinctual.
Mark, you’re absolutely right that I’m a young’un, but it’s a trait I seem to have inherited from my grandmother. She happens to be one of the most cynical, mocking people in my family and she particularly does it to those she believes she can trust.
It’s a very sophisticated manipulation technique known as “being a little shit who sabotages his relationships because he can’t keep his idiot mouth shut.”
Uh, Schtein, you two are in the middle on nowhere with no clue of where you are, no car or phone or phone reception, no weapons (I assume those were taken off them by their almost-would-be executioners), you ran away from said would-be executioners and some really dedicated X-Men cosplayers that suddenly attacked them, and you keep yelling your head off at each other.
Pray that Laurence had the smarts to at least pack a bottle of water in that backpack, and knows where north is without a compass, because your various mad science degrees clearly didn’t include ‘survival skills’.
At least the sun is coming up. That way you can see how lost you are.
Is that sun going up, or down? I think it’s down
With all that yelling Schtein and Laurence are doing, I picture Opa Schtein and his Amazing X-Kids sitting on a nearby hill and passing the popcorn while they watch.
I mean, that yelling must be audible for miles.
What is the motivation for mocking your friend for helping you?

Said as only a very young person would :-) (fwiw comment author is a very old person.)

Getting some Lupin III vibes from Doc’s pose in panel 2. Eeeee <3
Lupin The Third is like my favorite thing in the world, so that pleases me

… what is up with that blushing on panels 4 and 5?
Yes, blushing usually includes the ears, too.
He’s flustered.
Probably frustration. You can blush when you’re mad, though i think it’s usually refered to as ‘flushed’ in those circumstances

(whoops, ignore that last sentence, I forgot to delete it after I had gone back in the comic a few pages to check if is was dawn or dusk.)
if you go back a couple pages you’ll see Laurence calling someone on a cellphone, telling them where they are.
Wow, such a small outburst, hes a good friend. Glad Doc. has stopped, for now at-least. Also love panel 2 and 4’s expressions.
