Aww they like each other. Also, I imagine Schtein is really itching for some friendly social interactions afer all that time in the slammer if in his happy outburst he would go so far as to grab Laurence’s’ shoulder. Even Laurence seems surprised :)
haha maybe. It’s probably been a really long time since doc’s interacted with someone he considers a friend and not like an enemy, parental figure, or love interest.
Heh. my thoughts on seeing panel 4 were: “Wow, Schtein, that’s the most awkward pseudo-hug while simultaneously trying to keep maximum distance from each other EVER”. It can’t decide if it wants to be a hug or not, so it masquerades as a manly shoulder slap. ;-)
But given that Schtein was famous for hating all physical touching, this is… well I’m proud of Schtein. Even Laurence seems surprised.
I love the stances and body languages on this whole page. Nice bickering dialogue, too.
I had not expected Laurence to be this tall. I had always filed Schtein under “tall”, but looking back through the archives I realized he isn’t that tall. He’s the same height as Osgood (who may be tall for a woman, but not excessively so). It’s hard to find a page where Schteiin stands beside someone who is male and “normal sized”, because either Schtein is slouched over, or we see him with people who are supposed to be small and dumpy (like the Director at the research facility in the beginning) or build like a brick shithouse (i.e. Drew, the guy Schtein killed in prison).
Schtein’s about average height, I think. Around 5’10”. Delia is slightly shorter than he is but only by an inch or two. Laurence is slightly over 6 feet, so he’s a bit tall. Jayjay was also shorter than Doc but I think it was a bit hard to tell because most of the scenes with them together had Doc sitting on the top of a bunk bed. I could make a height chart but what a pain in the ass.
In the panels he says “kiss my grits” and “well, shoot” I imagine a southern accent and in the rest of the panels my internal voice for him defaults back to a typical american midwesterny accent. This is very conflicting.
He’s from Virginia, that is considered southern, and many people in virginia have nice thick southern accents. Doc’s isn’t that thick, though. It was trained out of him in private school and by his mother, but he can talk like that if he wants to. Tends to help when being friendly, he’s found.
I love that grey suit lots. Also I’m starting to picture Schtein’s voice being like Prof. Ibsen from the Jumanji cartoon (Aka William Sanderson), except maybe more through the nose?
hahah, jeeze, as literally the only other person on the planet who knows who Prof. Ibsen is let me shake your hand. You coulda said he was the toymaker from Blade Runner, tho, I mean that’s what he’s famous for. That guy would be a almost good voice for him if he was raspier.
Oops, yeah. I wasn’t trying to be obtuse, I promise! I do love me some Blade Runner. I think he had a bit more casual menace in his voice in the Ibsen role. (God I’m such a dork)
That second panel makes them look super-super old. More so than they already did.
Also, this friendship feels so natural that I think I might have been doing friendship wrong up to this point.
That last panel – I’ve never seen anyone look so happy at being lifted by their lapels. I love the smell of bromance in the morning. Smells like… hair tonic?

Schtein’s southerness just quadrupled, hah!
The best of friends.
I can finally hear his southerny-ness. :D Awesome job , Grundy!

clearly I need to really lay it on thick all the time. :D
Wait, Stein is actually southern? Or are you kidding? I assumed he was either being kind of sarcastic or teasing Lawrence.

Also : Laurence looking aghast at Herv touching him.

J.F. Sebastian. I can still hear Rutger Hauer’s Roy Batty say that name.
Blade Runner is practically indelibly stamped into my brain. ;-)

oh well yeah that’s like the only time I can think of him playing a villain role.
Panels 7 and 8…you can feel the history. Love!
I sorta forgot Doc is from Virginia until the “kiss my grits” and “Well, shoot.”
I wonder if they can actually work together?
Are you kidding? loo at them, they are the B of FFs!
Now thats a darn shame, On your blog you say its the end of the chapter already XD and i was hoping to see more of that bromance time!
ARE WE JUST GOING TO IGNORE LAURENCES’ FACE IN PANEL 8!?!? Because that’s something that will forever haunt my nightmares. Great job again, Beck!!! <3
it’s a YARR face to me
That second panel makes them look super-super old. More so than they already did.
Also, this friendship feels so natural that I think I might have been doing friendship wrong up to this point.
well laurence at least is kind of old I guess? He’s in his 40s
If Laurence is that much older than Schtein, why were they roomies?
I suppose it’s possible that Schtein got into college early or something.
you just answered your own question
I wonder why I do that?
Maybe I just like doing it, or it’s a habit.
You just wait I see what you did there
this stormy beginning is totally a (re)budding bromance.
was laurence scratched by a were-hunterstompson. I hear stage 3 gives you free raybans for life
you did it, you won the best comment award.
That last panel – I’ve never seen anyone look so happy at being lifted by their lapels. I love the smell of bromance in the morning. Smells like… hair tonic?
are dr. steins eyes hearts in the first panel!?
It’s Schtein and no they not.
I could just see emotive eyes for Schtein. They would be 90% evil and 10% random mood swings.
Maybe that’ll be one of the new features in the iBall 2.0
They have so much to talk about! Like … eyes.
That’s how you know they are best buds.
This page makes me smile every time I read it, I love this bromance! :D
You know, I just realized: Laurence has the EXACT opposite hairstyle that he had when they were in college. O_o
it’s true
That’s exactly what I say when folks I haven’t seen in awhile comment on just how gray I’ve gone. “At least it’s still there. What’s your excuse?”
Wonderful page! And… is there a tiny face in the smoke? Tiny smoke ghosts~
I’m so used to facebook I’m looking for a like button.
“Same old, same old…” *snerk* I love it.
And the effeminate poses have returned! Calloh! Callay!
Oh Schtein- how can you look so terribly unattractive and then so very attractive?
Quit it!…or don’t ;P
Oh. God.
Second to last panel.
That FACE. If Oswald Cobblepot had a tall, skinny, ginger cousin…
