Boy, I’m looking foward to having to draw those bruises for weeks.
Still, though, color pallette change! Hooray! Couldn’t have come sooner.
Boy, I’m looking foward to having to draw those bruises for weeks.

because i luv ya, Schtein.
We all do! XD
(btw, did i just see a heart-shaped smoke over there?)
I love the color pallette change! I’m always so happy when this updates!
Haha, I love Jay’s angel-of-mercy halo. Bless you, cigarette angel!
Also, heart shaped smoke. Schtein loves substance abuse!
Schtein + Making Poor Health Decisions. It’s a great OTP.
Color yay!
And JayJay is suspiciously sweet, doling out those coffin nails so freely. :\ According to my (scanty) jail knowledge from TV, those things are money, aren’t they?
they are.
I did the math a while back on what a single cigarette’s worth in prison, but now I can’t remember. But it was something like five bucks maybe. Maybe ten.
Prison cantina hell of marks up items, and I think you’re making below minimum wage in prison jobs.
From what I know everything is money. The whole barter thing. Also, I think that JayJay could get a hand on some items to allow the doctor to build this crazy things he will need to survive here. Also why would Jay Jay would have nobody else to talk, he seem quite able to make friends. Did something happen?
He’s black, and most people in prisons(in media),are white supremacists or at very least xenophobes/racists.
I apologize if this is Un-PC,but I have little to know social intelligence.
that’s incorrect, the majority of people in American prisons are people of color, I’m fairly sure. Either Hispanic or African. It has a lot to do with the levels of crime in lower economic areas. Desperate situations and easy outs and all that stuff. This happens with lower income white people just the same, but there’s a large disparity with the amount of poor people who are white or black or whatever.
A side effect of this is the small amount of white people in prison either just join up with skinheads and neonazis for protection and end up coming out of prison far more racist than they were when they went in.
A lot of people in prison have learning disabilities or were abused as children as well. That’s a whole can of worms I’d rather not go into, though.
It’s actually rather tragic. Prison is just depressing to think about on the whole.
As for why Jayjay doesn’t have anyone to talk to, well, I can’t and won’t go into that. Because it has to do with the plot. C:
But it has nothing to do with the demographics of the prison itself.
My first impression was that “one has to be nice to a dead man.” You know, him now officially being game for the neo-nazis.
One more thing. I already figured out that smoking is generally prohibited in American prison, but is the ban federal level, or does it vary between facilities?
It varies from prison to prison, yes. And also from security level to security level. If you’re allowed outside in recreation areas then you’re allowed to smoke.
Anyway, that’s a recent thing in American prisons and given that this is an alternate universe it doesn’t really apply. :D
In the fifties, cigarettes were good for you! Cigars even had vitamins in them.
I love the layouts within each of the panels, and the colors are nice and crisp. Awesome as usual. :)
Your skills improve by the second! :D
Looks like he finally got his chipped teeth, if I’m not mistaken.
Mmmm Schtein is a hawt smoker. whut?
LOVE the coloring, as usual. Very nicely done. c:
Oh joy, some bruises and a shiner to add to Schtein’s already terrifying and hostile countenance!
lol, what are the dudes in the first panel doing!?
well i guess they’re playing catch…. cause baseball wouldnt be allowed due to a blunt weapon being involved…
No, people play baseball in the yard in a lot of prisons. It varies from place to place. Some prisons have their own organized teams that play other prisons. Like the San Quentin Giants.
They might just be practicing catching, but if prisoners can have access to barbells and weights during recreation I don’t think they’d be denied baseball bats.
Just can’t take them back inside the cell block.
omg i cracked up. WHOAH there- guard your precious flower of maidenhood, schtein. that kid is working you over, prison style.
still waiting for Schtein to shank someone : P
his cigerrret turned me on, and i have no effing clue why.
I love his facial expressions. The page is as amazingly set up as always :) Don’t worry Schtein! We all love you!
Well, Schtein had to give up drinking, right? Might as well pick up a new vice, heh. I reeeeally want to love and adore Jay Jay, but I keep worrying that he’s too good to be true. He’s got to have some kind of dark secret or ulterior motive, right? Nice, normal friendly dudes don’t just end up in prison, do they?
I really want him to be the Morgan Freeman to Schtein’s Tim Robbins. I reeeeally do.
Also, I watched you do this strip on U-stream for awhile, so I have newfound appreciation for the thought that went into the little details like the clouds in the background, ha ha. I also really like the choice of colors, the teal contrasting nicely with their garish orange uniforms. Fabulous work, as always.
From what I’ve read picking up smoking is the worst thing you can do if you’re a recovering alcoholic. I think it extends the withdrawal symptoms, or something like that.
But what the hell else is he going to do in prison?
Those damn clouds! I think I must have drawn them like four times before I realized that they’re far away enough where they really don’t need much detail. Thanks for watching my efforts, hahah :D
Is that a cellphone tower in the background of panel 6? with all the birds on it and if so what would they need it for
Ahhh, JayJay! I can hear the choir of angels~! He’s such a cool guy; I hate to think he’s hiding nasty secrets and such. :(
That heart-shaped puff of smoke just makes me crack up.
…also, is that a match Schtein’s using? Where’d he get that?
out of curiosity Beckey, have you ever watched Metalocalypse?
I watched a season and a half of it. I’ve been meaning to watch the rest, but I never seem to remember to do it.
Why do you ask? C:
do you remember dick knubbler the record exec dude? i just watched one of the episodes with him in it and his robotic eyes totally reminded me of Schtein and made me smile.
Something about the lighting in panel 3 just makes me think of Nova Prospekt in Half-Life 2. …which is certainly not a bad thing, it’s my favourite part of that game both in terms of gameplay and visuals. …except now I am going to go play it instead of drawing. I love and hate you at the same time, ahaha.
Is there any chance you could post up the inks for this page? I’d really love to see how the colours changed it.
yeah, I could do that, sure.
Which part’s Nova Prospekt? Is that the cool prison area after you have control of those bugs? That part pretty much rules.
Amazing story, but i cant help but feel that Schtein is on the path to becoming a super-villan of the genius variety. I very much enjoy how you portray him as an affable character in a way that causes the reader to be intrigued yet feel sympathety for him, while overshadowing about Schtein’s possible future decent into villainy.
Damn this was a good strip. I wonder if the skinhead will have a problem with the doc’s black buddy?
OH my gawd, Jayjay’s so freaking cute here!Daw!
Good lord, I fall in love with Schtein’s character more and more with every page. The story’s well-written and has agreat pace that I can follow… Somehow, every time I keep reading, I feel sad. Does the Doc become one of those really, really, REALLY screwed up villains later? Or is there an even bigger twist to that? Sighs, sorry, he’s just one of those characters whom you love to pieces and want so bad to be one of the good guys, even as an Anti-hero(which are cooler than heroes are).
