Hello welcome to Chapter Nine :O
I didn’t mean to start updating again on Dr. Schtein’s birthday the day after his birthday but that’s some fun happenstance. He’s an October baby.
I guess I ought to mention the update gap. Again. always update gaps. Webcomics!
I don’t want to go into it too much and I’d appreciate it if my comments section wasn’t just condolences, like, I appreciate it, but I’d rather you talk about my comic you know?
Anyway the short of it is I moved at the beginning of the summer to help take care of my mother in law who had terminal cancer. Which is why even after moving my updates did not resume. Being a caregiver is time consuming. It was never really rough or anything, spending time with her was a delight, she was a wonderful person, and until the end she was very mobile and could mostly take care of herself, she just needed a lot of company. She passed at the end of August, and after that I was too depressed to draw but it’s at the point where drawing and working on comics is what I think will lift me out of that. Anyway, that’s where I’ve been.
Now, let’s make this goober interact with his estranged daughter, because it is about damn time.
Oh wow, I somehow managed to catch this a little over an hour after the update. It’s actually been so long since I read this that I think I’ll need to reread just to refresh my memory, ha ha! Good to see it back, though.
It’s a pleasure to have this comic back! I hope the work and reception does its work to help you at least as much as you’ve helped your audience (with boredom if nothing else). I’ve been looking forward to this particular interaction for a loooong time!

Also happened to catch this update not long after it went up! Welcome back. Been waiting years for this interaction too, so bring on the awkward deadbeat dad shenanigans~ I’ve always loved Alice’s moody teen look and her outfit here is my favorite! Hope she gets through this chapter alright. If not alright than hopefully with minimal scarring.
I finally bothered to build her a nice little reference wardrobe folder on my computer since she’ll be in the comic a bit more after this. So much teen goth but also a little punk rock. should be fun to draw.

Great to have you back. I’ve been checking every week since the last update, desperate to know if Laurence was going to be all right. Figures that there’s been an update and I STILL don’t know if Laurence is going to be all right (ugh… writers…), but I can’t even be mad because we got gorgeous chapter art instead.
I really love that every chapter has a different cover style – kind of makes me feel like I’m about to step into a different genre each time. And the chapter plots definitely reflect that tonal shift, but they pull it off really well while still feeling coherent. Can’t wait to see what’s in store for us this time.
don’t worry you won’t have to wait too long to find out about Laurence. I didn’t mean to leave him on hold like that for so long. It just figures a gap happened when I imperiled a main characters life like that huh
Welcome back! I think I need to re-read, I’ve forgotten most of the characters. Also the slight fish-eye effect centered around the characters glaring at each other is neat, it definitely adds some tension and draws the reader in towards the house :3

I had a similar hoodie as a teenager, except it had those holes you put your thumbs through for maximum slouching, glowering, and such. Interesting his eyes are blue here and not red. Memory? Imagination? Self-image?

wow you know what, I don’t know, I never thought about it before. He liked going to halloween parties back when he drank. I think he might be halloween apathetic, though, he just liked drinking and hitting on ladies in skimpy costumes.
Although now it would be a day where he could walk around and not get weird looks because of his eyes.

It’s good to hear that your family is more functional and loving than poor Schtein’s was.
When I saw the greenish zombie arm rising from the lawn at first I thought, “Oh no, is Herville’s Grandpa coming for a visit? He could really give the house the true Halloween touch, what with glowing mushroom zombies, though. And I bet he makes a mean, I mean totally harmless and healthful, mushroom soup…”
But then I saw it’s probably just a plastic Halloween deco. Whew.
But now I have a mental image of Orville rising from the lawn, brushing himself off, smiling his glowing smile, and Herville turns to his daughter, laconically going, “Oh by the way, Alice, this is your grand-grandfather, Orville. Orville, Alice.”
Orville: “What a lovely young lady. Pleased to make your acquaintance.”
Alice: “Er, should his eyes be glowing? Is that a thing in this family?”
Herville: “Ye-eah… about that. He’s got a PhD in medicine and transspecies genetics, but do yourself a favour and don’t ask him for medical advice. Don’t ask him about bacteriophage transfer viruses, or we’re here all day. Don’t ask him about fungi and slime moulds, either, please.”
Orville: “Ah, but slime moulds are lovely… sure, Ascomycota –like my walking chair here– are useful, but in the wonderful world of fungi and Protista, the plasmodial myxomycetes are far more mobile and interesting in their potential. And I sense protostelids all over the decaying leaves in this yard.” (takes a deep breath) “Can you smell them? Ah, autumn.”
Alice: “Uh, cool, I guess. And those… other people that just crawled from the hole? *Are* they people?”
Orville: “Oh, those are just my… domestics.”
Alice: “They look like zombies.”
Herville: “Uh, they’re just, they’re just in the Halloween spirit, right, let’s get inside and get a flame thrower, I mean, a cup of coffee.”
Alice: (whispers) “Mom’s got a leaf blower in the garage…”
Herville: “I can work with that.”
Super excited for this chapter, though I always get super amped when I see this webcomic updating.
Interesting choice of a chapter name. Tech Duinn is basically the Celtic underworld, isn’t it?
Will this be a gathering of lost souls, in the sense of Schtein meeting with his daughter, and both of them being somewhat emotionally adrift? Will it focus on the kind of… lingering effects of Orville’s work on Herville and how that has (presumably) been passed on to his daughter?
Or is this where we say goodbye to Laurence? D:

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA ever since it was revealed that he had a daughter I’ve been absolutely waiting for them to interact I CANNOT wait for this mega excited.

Oh, by the way, is there any planned schedule for updates? Take however much time you need, definately no pressure, but if there was a specific day you had in mind I can just get in the habit of checking then :)
I usually try and update wednesdays. if not wednesdays then weekends. But I prefer wednesday.
At least it’s not tuesdays, I could never get a handle on tuesdays.

dangit, two weeks late, looking forward to seeing how it goes, I wonder if this whole getting shot thing is an elaborate halloween prank? but probably not, probably will require him to be around to interact with his estranged daughter? Possibilities? He talks to his divorced wife and gets a scream boner in front of his kid? I don’t know but i can’t wait to see what happens next :)
One upside of there being big gaps in the update schedual is that I ws able to read the entire archive in one day :)
