Though you never know, maybe his jail time will do some good for his physique. Oh, and btw, I love the fact that he’s NOT some ripped muscle-man, because he’s a brilliant scientist, and he physically resembles the few brilliant scientists I’ve been able to meet, ha ha. Kudos on the realism.
Yeah, I don’t really like drawing ripped guys anyway. I also didn’t want to go the opposite route and make him some thin, wispy bishie. Seems to be done to death on anti-hero types. It’s not realistic, anyway. He sits around all day and drinks. Thus: gut.
Awww… and there i had hoped for some minor stabbing, or tossing Herv the bag to make him cut himself when he catches it.
But alright, i guess Drew prefers a more personal method of inflicting pain.

Beck! I love this page. Still can’t find the pop culture references. One suggestion though, on panel 2, maybe you could emphasize the glowing by putting a yellow gradient/glow on that orange-brown bg that will match the lighting on his face/ the incinerator?
I dunno, I considered that, but I kinda wanted that panel to stand out a bit on its own. I’ll play around with it maybe.
the references are that I stole two people from comics and cartoons and put them in the background of the first panel (and forground). I don’t think you read The Walking Dead, but that’s where the chick’s from. The other one’s impossible to spot now because the page is so shrunk down. :D
Are the people in the bottom left of the first panel supposed to be guards? But over all I like the use of the door way to guide the eyes to the subject
Yes. But it’s too hot to wear guard hats down there. Should be easy to spot guards from inmates, though. Guards = brown clothes, inmates = white and orange clothes.
I bet he asks doc if he speaks German which he replies yes – he learned it from his father and grandfather, even though their home language and his first language thereby was French, as his mother was a French. Then he asks Stein about his opinion to Jews, and he replies he sees little points in antisemitism after what the third world ward did to Israel.
After that, the picture on my crystal ball gets all foggy. All I can see is a veineous hairy arm and the big Neo-nazi lying in the puddle of his own blood.
YAY! You updated Early! And the lighting and colors are amazing as always… I never thought Drew as a scary name o3o For I have a friend (who is a nerd like me) who couldn’t hurt a fly… I was expecting a masculine name for snakehead :D
German… White Kingdom, Don’t do it Schtein! Not Die Furher!!!
On the subject of walking forwards/backwards, I don’t know how much help this is, but move their center of gravity from over their feet in the direction their moving. The faster they’re walking, the greater the lean. Kinda like a Segway, but all jointed and complicated.
All from a decade of sitting around working on formulas and equations in front of a computer screen. All fueled by heavy drinking and caffiene. The scientist’s physique!
Hey, that’s a lot like a cartoonist’s physique, actually. Which reminds me, it’s coffee time.
Who’s the lady with the scar on her face? Will we see more of her? A scar isn’t the sort of distinguishing mark one usually finds on a one-shot background character. Is she a guard? She’s dressed like a guard. What’s a female guard doing in a male prison? Or is she sneaking around with some ulterior motive? It’s hard to tell if the male guard she’s talking to knows her or is being awkward from having just met her.
you know…i just realized something ironic…earlier when marcus was talking about great grandpa, schtein said that he was a felon and that they didn’t talk about him…and now he’s a felon too!
I’m surprised nobodies commented on the fact that they aren’t using shovels which are clearly visible in the first panel…. and the fact that ‘shoveling’ was the proposed work duty…
I think that’s because those shovels are too small to be used for pushing the bags. It would require them to perfectly balance the bag on that not-large-enough metal plate, and thus would be less effective and prone to bag-ripping.
I hate to be nitpicky, but as a natural German, I’d like to point out that the name should be spelled “Stein”. Like Einstein. Even though it is pronounced with a scht sound, as a lot of German words starting with the letters “ST” are, it’s still written that way. I can’t even think of any German word that starts with the letter combination SCHT.
Maybe Herville’s ancestors, when they emigrated to the USA, wanted to make sure Americans would pronounce it correctly and thus changed the spelling? But wouldn’t they have changed it to “Shtein” in that case? Even the “ei” phoneme (pronounced like the English “i” not as “ey”) seems to give English speakers trouble.
That’s pretty nitpicky. I’ve seen it spelled that way before tons of times. There’s five listings in the phonebook for the US right now with that last name.
Yes, in the US. That just proves my point. It’s a variation that does not exist in Germany, but was probably created by US immigration offices way back, trying to phonetically spell a non-English name.
I’m afraid I’m not seeing your point, man. He is in the u.s. Plus he’s not an immigrant, his ancestors were, so that’s how it’s always been spelt to him.
The dude asking him if it’s a german name really more implies is it German in origin, not are you, yourself German. And it is, even if it is spelled all crazy.
The guy asking about his name probably doesn’t know how it’s spelled. He’s only heard it, not read it. So who knows how he’s spelling it in his head– maybe he’s assuming it’s the pedantic “correct” German spelling “Stein.”
I love the way Schtein is pushing the bags in the last panel, fingers all curled backwards, as if he’s trying to push them in without actually touching them. Nice detail.
yay!
first post! You are a cheater because you live in the same room I do.
Man, this page is beautiful. I love the last panel. Poor Schtein, he’s all frazzled and hot :( Although he’s always frazzled, I guess.
He’s also always hot! Wooooooo!
Ha ha ha, yyyyeaaaahh… sure he is. ;)

Well, he may not be the epitome of attractiveness. But *I* like him.
Me too. He’s got a cute butt.
“world’s unhappiest man” —
An absolute nightmare for the clean freak, I’d imagine.
Things are about to get much worse for poor Schtein, aren’t they…
I bet he’s glad to have the gloves, at least. I love his awesome glare, though. >8D
yeah, that was good timing that he got them right before this. :o
is it wrong that i just envisioned Doc saying this page in a very thick german accent? cause it just worked. and is he gonna get nazied?
Nah i don’t think he realy cares for his german heritage or pronounces anything in an accent. Not even to piss off Drew.
It is wrong, he has a virginian accent. :D
Awww… and there i had hoped for some minor stabbing, or tossing Herv the bag to make him cut himself when he catches it.
But alright, i guess Drew prefers a more personal method of inflicting pain.
Damnit! Near miss…
You know… there’s this sharp, pointy thing, sticking out of the bag Drew carries…
It’s glass! Look out, Drew!
Awww… and there i had hoped for some minor stabbing, or tossing Herv the bag to make him cut himself when he catches it.
But alright, i guess Drew prefers a more personal method of inflicting pain.
Ze Germunz, ze willen ah new nazi, yez?

It’s Franken-STEIN! (stab!)
Possibly?
I dunno, I considered that, but I kinda wanted that panel to stand out a bit on its own. I’ll play around with it maybe.

I really need to learn to read all the comments before commenting.

Yes. But it’s too hot to wear guard hats down there. Should be easy to spot guards from inmates, though. Guards = brown clothes, inmates = white and orange clothes.
Oh nooo I can see where this is going. Damn prison nazis.

We’ll see about that! >:D
Yes, I don’t think Drew is really interested in a conversation on cultural heritage. But let’s not forget that old doc is his own kind of psycho.
Ahahaha, that made my day.
unhappy he is, but still super Cute!
just can’t stop loving this man…!
No, I updated on time! :D
Drew doesn’t need a scary name, anyway. He lets the tattoos do the talking. Also the pecs.
Some wonderful coloring in this one! Lovely lovely!
Hey, is that the “FUCK” and “KILL”-on his knuckles guy (also known as the racist)? Oh noes! (You drew him awesomely, though!)
It is, thanks for reminding me! I don’t think I wrote those words on his hands in the next page, I better double check.
On the subject of walking forwards/backwards, I don’t know how much help this is, but move their center of gravity from over their feet in the direction their moving. The faster they’re walking, the greater the lean. Kinda like a Segway, but all jointed and complicated.
oOo, GREAT tip!!!
Have you a deviantart page?
Yes, actually, but I don’t have much up at the moment.
techhead0.deviantart.com
Thx!
I know what you mean, I have to put more stuff on my deviantart too.
“It’s Schtein, Doctor Schtein.” Classic Phrase Alert. I love what you did with that introduction
Those guards in the first panel are adorable
What a great page! Ugh, Schtein, you’re so horribly unhealthy looking and flabby.
All from a decade of sitting around working on formulas and equations in front of a computer screen. All fueled by heavy drinking and caffiene. The scientist’s physique!
Hey, that’s a lot like a cartoonist’s physique, actually. Which reminds me, it’s coffee time.
Haha! Schtein’s body is like a cautionary tale for cartoonists.
I don’t care if this ‘Dreeew’ guy has a name now, I’m still gonna call him Giant Racist!
Oh my, it must be hot down there, look how he’s blushing! Well, at least he then gets some color, for once :3
I don’t know if it’s because of how hot it is, or if he’s just that mad about his new job. Maybe both! He actually looks alive.
Yeah, I would say there’s nothing wrong with being mad and hot sometimes if it makes you look alive^^
I thought he had no problem with handling garbage. That’s what the gloves are for!
Yeah, but he still doesn’t like being in a room with mountains of garbage. Plus it’s all hot and gross. It can’t smell great in there.

Man, there’s female guards at male prisons all the time. Trust me, I’ve watched like fifty prison documentaries so far.
me: OH A MARATHON OF DATELINE LOCKUP!!! COLOR ME THERE.
The horror stories female guards have to tell. Gah.
Oooh man D: Buff guy Drew looks like someone that would make Schtein his prison bitch. Be careful Dr. Schtein!
Amazing page! Why do I keep thinking I see Dr. Drakken in there… My mind! It’s finally snapped. Can’t wait to read the next one.
more like you have a good eye for detail. :D
Awesooome!! I love the colours and shading here.
“And we’re gonna be BFFs! FOREVER.”
Oh lord, Drew has the schutzstaffel insignia on his back. This guy is nightmares.
you know…i just realized something ironic…earlier when marcus was talking about great grandpa, schtein said that he was a felon and that they didn’t talk about him…and now he’s a felon too!
This… doesn’t bode well. :(
Beautiful page, though~ <3
I’m surprised nobodies commented on the fact that they aren’t using shovels which are clearly visible in the first panel…. and the fact that ‘shoveling’ was the proposed work duty…
also, scar guard is not amused by meek guard.
I think that’s because those shovels are too small to be used for pushing the bags. It would require them to perfectly balance the bag on that not-large-enough metal plate, and thus would be less effective and prone to bag-ripping.
they’re for small debri cleanup or shovelling the ashes out of the ash

It’s less common, sure, but it does happen.

Sorry, Igor Schtein? Information Technology?
That guy’s name is the best name anyone ever had, that’s all I know.
I just reread the comic and just realized how I laugh aloud at like, nearly every page :,D You’re an excellent story teller.
I think Drew should know that moustache makes him look pretty Mexican…
Oh god, Schtein and the neo-nazis. This comic is getting better every time I load it up.
yayz!! is he gonnamfind his favorite tie anywhere in there? i hope so..
I don’t know, if if he did I sort of doubt he’d still want it. :D
I love the way Schtein is pushing the bags in the last panel, fingers all curled backwards, as if he’s trying to push them in without actually touching them. Nice detail.
Oh god, I love his beer gut.
